Wine in Moderation launches new digital responsible service training tool

PRESS RELEASE - Brussels, 19/06/2025 – Wine in Moderation is proud to announce the release of its new digital Responsible Service Training tool, designed to empower wine professionals around the world with essential knowledge on how to serve wine responsibly and promote a culture of moderation. This new education tool is the result of three years’ work launched in the frame of the Wine in Moderation strategy for 2020-2025 which aims at empowering wine professionals around the world about responsible and moderate consumption patterns.

One of the best ways to reach wine consumers is through sector professionals who are often in direct contact with their customers (wine tastings, wine tourism, hospitality, etc.). Wine in Moderation firmly believes that all representatives of the wine sector – across every region and throughout the entire value chain – have a vital role to play in communicating the value of moderation and contributing to the reduction of harm caused by abusive and hazardous drinking. Recognising that education and training are key to empowering professionals with the knowledge and tools needed to promote responsible consumption, a training initiative has been developed that is available in both face-to-face and digital formats.

This training will be adapted to the cultural contexts and national legislation of each country to ensure effective implementation. Every module will address a specific topic crucial to the sustainability of the wine sector, such as wine and health, the legal framework, good practices, and responsible communication. Designed to empower professionals with the tools to deliver a responsible wine experience, the training has already earned praise from leading figures, including former WSET CEO Ian Harris.

After the successful release of our face-to-face training in 2023, we are thrilled to now offer this valuable content in a digital format as well,” said Sandro Sartor, President of Wine in Moderation. “Making the training accessible to all markets is a significant step forward in expanding the reach of responsible service education. This flexible, accessible tool will support wine professionals everywhere in deepening their commitment to sustainability and social responsibility.

The training has already been adapted, tested, and is ready for the markets of Germany, Italy, Portugal, and the UK, but wine professionals from any country are welcome to take the ‘generic’ version of the training in English. Furthermore, it will be gradually rolled out to several additional countries where Wine in Moderation is active, including Spain where it will be released soon, broadening its impact over time.

Professionals active in the wine sector are invited to take this training to gain knowledge about the responsible service of wine and tailored to their specific area of expertise. Upon registration, participants will be guided through a dedicated learning path based on their professional background—whether they are winemakers, oenologists and sommeliers, hospitality professionals, or active in wine tourism. Each path includes a curated selection of modules that align with the realities and responsibilities of their role. To receive the official certificate, professionals must complete the required modules for their profile and successfully pass the quiz at the end of every module. However, all participants will also have full access to the remaining modules across other profiles, which they are welcome to explore for their own enrichment, without being required to complete them for certification.

Access and conditions:

  • In countries where there is a National Coordinator, interested individuals are encouraged to contact their National Coordinator to explore the access modalities, as some National Coordinators will give their members access for free.
  • In markets where we do not have National Coordinators, a small fee of 75 euros will be requested to access the course.
  • Once enrolled, participants will have two weeks to complete the training. Upon successful completion, they will receive an official Wine in Moderation Responsible Service Training Certificate.

This initiative reflects Wine in Moderation’s commitment to social sustainability, professional responsibility, and the promotion of moderate and responsible wine enjoyment across the globe.
