Traditional Georgian winemaking method makes the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity

On 4 December, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) added Qvevri, the traditional Georgian winemaking method, to its List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Georgia’s traditional winemaking method consists of fermenting grapes in earthenware and egg-shaped vessels. Archelogical evidence, brings the use of these vessels
8000 years back. This tradition, which was never abandonned, plays a central role in the daily lives of the Georgian population and is part of their cultural identity. The know-how of Qvevri-making is passed on through generations who take part in communal harvesting and general activities related to wine-making.
